Mac or a PC (Hardware) (inc gank v i-Ron)
Nerds of WHO.

I am at the point where I need to invest in a new, top spec laptop that is going to last me at least 3 years.

Windows or Mac OS really makes no odds to me as 90% of the use is for Photoshop and Lightroom.

I need at least 16gb RAM, a decent sized SSD and a Quad Core i7.

With this in mind I've narrowed it down to the Dell XPS 15, or the top of the range MacBook Pro Retina.

Both have a 500gb SSD, USB3.0, the same Ram and a similar processor, same have a 2gb dedicated graphics card.

The Dell is £1,500 and the Mac is £2k.
The Mac has the Retina, the Dell now comes with a 4k display, which at that size to be honest won't look much different.

I suppose the question is - will the dell last?
In my experience, the Apple hardware has lasted really well, first MacBook Pro has lasted 6 years and although it's a bit slow, it still works very well, same with the 4 year old one I'm typing on now. £500 however is a saving you can't ignore, and if I needed to, I could reconfigure the hard drives whereas the Mac you can't (easily).

Should do me nicely for the next 3 or so years.

It'll be nice to be able to view my edits in that kind of detail, wish I had more work coming in to do it!

You're doing almost exactly what I did resolution-wise- trying to mix and match an HD screen with a UHD screen. In Windows 7 you could only use one or the other so if you set the resolution to HD everything stayed the same on the 1080 screen but text was stupidly big on the 4K screen. If you set it to 4K text was too small to read on the HD screen.

Windows 10 sorts that all out. Using Photoshop on a 4K screen is an amazing jump. It's a luxury to see your big photos near their full size at a lovely resolution. It gives you a much better overview of what you need to do to get a photo up to scratch. Looking at the effects of your unsharp mask at 100% whilst being able to see the entire image is particularly useful.

Just buy which ever one you want to use.

All computers are pain in the arse anyway.

Yes I read the scaling issue has been sorted in Windows 10. Looking at a couple of weeks before I get it so something else may pop up in the meantime.

I've got an external 1080P monitor so I'm hoping to run lightroom dual screen, if I manage without I'll just flog the monitor

Nice bit of bling HH. From my own recent experience of jumping from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 purely because I have two screens, one 1920x1200 and a new 4K monitor that Windows 7 couldn't scale properly, Windows 10 is working out really great for me.

I was shitting it because I didn't want to change my operating system halfway through a job but I needn't have worried.

In short, make sure you get Windows 10 and when you install it select 'custom installation' so you can untick about 3 boxes to stop Microsoft collating all your personal stuff 'so third-parties we work with can send you targeted advertising based on your browsing history'. Don't let them know your location either. Busy cunts.

Nice choice of laptop though. I sometimes nob around in Selfridges at the concession that sells MSI laptops and they always seem top quality.

After much research, this still looks like the way to go:

Thanks to Scraper for recommending MSI.

The battery life will be utterly shit but that's not really an issue.

boltkunt 3:52 - All good here SON!

HH - Just use what yo feel comfortable with mate, i have DXO Pro10, Viewpoint and film pack.

Also have lightroom.

I used Aperture for years though so moved from that, i only do light stuff anyway..crops, dust spots and a small saturation boost etc, i haven't the brain power to learn anything else.

I've seen a lot of these editing alternatives lie Capture 1, but they don't seem to do anything that Lightroom can't. Really happy with the CC package.

Keeps everything organised too.

Part of the upgrade is I need usb3 so I can backup quickly rather than overnight on usb2 currently.

Honest Hammer 12:39 - I like it mate, use it more than anything else but the only drawback is the time it takes to load lots of photos as it goes through them one by one and 'lens corrects' them.
Apart from that it's the shizzle.
